About this work
Bach is credited with at least ten settings of the chorale "Allein Gott in der Höh' sei Ehr'," including BWV 662-664, 675-677, 711, and 715-717. BWV 716 may not be by Bach, but it has not yet been definitively attributed to anyone else. Despite its brevity (about two minutes), this is a well-fleshed-out multi-voice fugue on the chorale tune, more elaborate than its catalog neighbors BWV 715 (a simple harmonization) and BWV 717 (setting the tune against a two-part fugue). It is less grave than its immediate predecessor, but more stately than its successor.
