No.42 In dich hab ich gehoffet, Herr

About this work

This chorale prelude appears in the second part of Bach's masterful collection Das Orgelbüchlein. The first part is comprised of 33 pieces in five sections, while the latter consists of 13 works in just one section, the Glaubenslieder. This chorale prelude, "Ich dich hab ich gehoffet, Herr" (In You I Have Put My Trust, Lord), is the eighth piece here and, while it is one of the shorter Glaubenslieder items -- in some performances having a duration of only a minute or so -- it is still quite a worthwhile offering. The work has a fairly lively though unhurried pacing, with the chorale theme actually coming across as somewhat exotic or of Eastern European origin. Some organists play the work at a slower tempo, mostly bleaching it of its more colorful side, while imparting a somewhat solemn, even ethereal sense to the music. As usual, Bach's contrapuntal writing is subtly conceived throughout, providing a energetic blend of rhythmic and harmonic support. This chorale prelude sounds quite effective in slower interpretations, but yields far more color and spirit in livelier performances.
