Die Sommernacht

Franz Schubert

Die Sommernacht in C major

D289 • “Wenn der Schimmer von dem Monde”

About this work

Schubert's setting of Friedrich Klopstock's Die Summernacht (The Summer Night) (D. 289) is a genre-bending song. As Klopstock's three verses move from evoking the summer night to recalling the grave of his beloved to nostalgia for the love and beauty which he has lost, so Schubert's slow and solemn setting moves melodically from aria to recitative to folk song. Yet for all its structural innovation, Schubert's Die Summernacht is still a simple and affecting song whose sublimely consoling melody never fades.
