About this work
This 1984 piece for alto, violin and viola, is not openly religious but a setting of a poem by Clemens Brentano. The unusual instrumental support makes it look less like a song than an incantation. Lasting almost six minutes, the lyrics of this little piece contrasts the voice of the human lover with that of the nightingale. The stringed instruments sometimes accompany, sometimes move to the foreground while the voice rests. A charming little song.
