Baltic States: Landmarks

About this playlist

The Baltic States of Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania regained their political independence after the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1990 and experienced a re-awakening of their national consciousness. People used musical performances as a metaphor of protest against the Soviet oppression, which later became known as the ‘Singing Revolution’. While this mainly occured within folk and popular music, many composers supported the cultural phenomenon by employing national folk music and poetry into their works.
