Orlando de Lassus

Orlando de Lassus

About this playlist

One of the most prolific composers of the late Renaissance, Orlando de Lassus was born in Mons and was taken to Italy for his musical education at the age of 12. His reputation as a child prodigy led to rumours that he had been abducted on three occasions by churches and noblemen interested in his music. Although there is no proof of this story, it does show the high esteem in which his abilities were held. At 24 he settled in Munich and worked for the rest of his life in the service of the Dukes of Bavaria, despite receiving many lucrative offers of employment elsewhere. Lassus produced an enormous output of both sacred and secular music. Besides masses and motets, he wrote French chansons, German Lieder, and Italian madrigals, all carrying a distinct and authentic charm, which endures to this day. Although he only composed vocal music, a number of songs have been arranged as instrumental versions, some of which appear on this playlist.
