About this playlist
As the birthplace of the violin, Italy has maintained a special connection with the instrument. Local composers Vivaldi and Paganini championed it, and are credited with helping it to achieve iconic status among instruments. This playlist features evergreen interpretations of classics, hidden gems of all eras, and recent reinterpretations of old favourites. I’ve also included a feast of glorious concertos and chamber music by composers perhaps better known for their operas and symphonic music. Ruggerio Ricci was the first violinist to record Paganini’s Caprices, in 1947. My 2012 recording was made on the same violin, a 1734 Guarneri del Gesù. Can you recognise its sound?
