Purcell: #101

About this playlist

Henry Purcell had a very distinctive style within the Baroque tradition. He was prolific in his output, thanks in part to his early start in music – as a boy chorister in the Chapel Royal, and then working as an assistant to the 'keeper of wind instruments to the King'. He ended up holding some of the most prestigious jobs in English music at the time – organist at Westminster Abbey and the Chapel Royal – but he also had a flair for the theatrical, and wrote opera and other music for the stage throughout his life.
