Fauré holds a special position in the history of French music – not to mention classical music in general. He's often seen as a crucial link between late romanticism and more abstract, atonal work of the 20th century, and his later style is something all of its own – although, still unmistakably him. As Aaron Copland said: "The themes, harmonies, form, have remained essentially the same, but with each new work they have all become more fresh, more personal, more profound."
