About this playlist
One of the real 20th century masters. Although he's often referred to in the same breath as Debussy, the two have their own distinct styles. Ravel's music changed a lot as time went on, but in 1932 a blow to the head in a car accident – though not considered serious at the time – may have exacerbated a pre-existing brain condition. Experts still aren't sure exactly what happened, but he more or less stopped composing after this point. Some even suggest you can hear the deterioration of his mind in the works running up to his accident, in the repetitive nature of "Bolero" for example.
