Jacob Gershowitz, the son of Russian-Jewish immigrants, was born in New York on 26 September 1898. During his prolific career he wrote more than 500 songs for Broadway and Hollywood films – most of them together with his brother and favorite lyricist, Ira Gershwin. Works like the triumphant Rhapsody in Blue, An American in Paris and Porgy and Bess show off his unique compositional style – combining elements of classical tradition, jazz and popular music. Despite his early death at the age of 38, George Gershwin became one of the most successful composers of the 20th century.
