Sheku Kanneh-Mason: Elgar

Exclusive Audio Commentary

About this playlist

It might have been his performance at the 2018 Royal Wedding that brought him to the attention of the world at large, but Sheku Kanneh-Mason's beautifully sustainted tone and masterful phrasing were well known in the classical world since he won the prestigious BBC Young Musician of the Year competition in 2016 (also marking the first black musician to win the prize).

The centrepiece of this new album is the Elgar Cello Concerto, which Sheku describes as his "favourite piece of music, ever", in this exclusive podcast interview with Primephonic. Alongside his thoughtful insights on Elgar, and the rest of the music on the album, he also discusses his musical heroes, early music education and diversity in the classical music industry.
