When you think of the ballet, the thought of a riot erupting in the theatre mid-performance is probably not one of the first things which comes to mind. But on the 29th of May, 1913, the most famous riot in classical music history took place in Paris, at the premiere of Stravinsky’s ballet – The Rite of Spring. The ballet was comissioned by Sergei Diaghilev, the legendary impressario and founder of the Ballet Russe, and his work with Stravinsky led to one of the most influential musical works of all time.
What about this music was so radical? Why does the Rite of Spring represent such a turning point? And why did music of the early 20th century explode into so many different factions?
