The word renaissance literally translates to mean ‘rebirth’. In literature, visual art and architecture, this directly referred to a return to the artistic ideals and style of ancient Greece and Rome – so called ‘classical’ art. And yet, as if often the case, music isn’t quite so simple thanks to a lack of ancient musical manuscripts. The Renaissance, in music, was nonetheless a time of great innovation and progress. The invention of the printing press along with major changes to the structure of society meant that more people could access and practice music, leading to a boom in secular music and the emergence of a unified, international style for the first time.
