Despite being an ordinary, everyday means of travel for many of us, trains continue to represent a source of excitement and mystery more than 200 years after the invention of the steam engine. Composers have been inspired by many aspects of railways: the hiss of steam, rhythmic clatter, shrill whistles, grand old stations, and various journeys taken on the rails, from the romantic to the unspeakably horrific.
