Independently wealthy, Wassenaer was an amateur musician and composer. In addition to serving as an ambassador and administrator for his country, he was responsible for many compositions initially attributed to Pergolesi, Birkenstock and others. His works generally conform to a conservative south Italian style, are richly scored and contain many fugual sections.
