Based in Toronto, Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra was established in 1979, and has since built up a broad discography. The ensemble was founded by oboist Kenneth Solway and bassoonist Susan Graves, but directed for most of its existence by violinist Jeanne Lamon, between 1981 and 2014. This 2006 recording brings together the famous setting of the Gloria by Vivaldi with a lesser known version by Bach (who reused this original cantata in his B minor Mass). Between them comes a setting of Psalm 92 by the French composer Jean-Joseph de Mondonville, who was born in 1711 and who enjoyed a successful career and favourable contemporary comparisons with Rameau. The album is also an opportunity to enjoy the considerable refinement of the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra, and a friendly meeting with their sister-ensemble, the Tafelmusik Chamber Choir.
