Formed in Madrid in 1997 and now permanently based in Barcelona (where its members teach at the Escola Superior de Musica de Catalunya), the Cuarteto Casals came to prominence with first prizes in the 2000 London and 2002 Brahms International Competitions. A glance at this fine group's Harmonia Mundi discography shows that core repertory has not been ignored – Haydn, Mozart, Schubert, Brahms and (most recently) the complete Beethoven string quartets – but there's a wonderful freshness of new discovery about this ensemble's very first CD, a collection of the three string quartets by the remarkable 17-year-old Juan Crisóstomo Arriaga (1806-26), the 'Spanish Mozart' who died in Paris just 10 days shy of his 20th birthday. read more
