Born in Belgium in 1946, René Jacobs started his musical life as a boy chorister at Ghent Cathedral and was performing as a counter-tenor before becoming a conductor. His experience of singing has strongly informed his operatic interpretations, while his scholarly activities have placed him at the forefront of historically informed performance. His brisk, urgent, questing approach seems to strip away layers of false tradition to reveal the music in a new light, sometimes startling and always filled with insight.
