Grieg: Lyric Pieces

Leif Ove Andsnes

Editor's Choice

Edvard Grieg published his 66 Lyric Pieces in ten volumes between 1867 and 1901. The first and last pieces (Arietta and Efterklang) share a melody, by all accounts a favourite of the composer. His fellow Norwegian, Leif Ove Andsnes studied at the Bergen music school that now bears Grieg's name and recorded this disc on the composer's own Steinway piano at his villa in Troldhaugen in 2002. Now a museum, the location is the inspiration for 'Wedding Day at Trolhaugen', written to mark the occasion of Grieg's 25th wedding anniversary, now one of the best-known of the Lyric Pieces. This album is a gorgeous celebration of nordic landscapes, folklore, seasonal scenes, and fantastic piano playing, made all the more special by the century-long local connection between composer and performer. read more
