Delius: Paris, Florida Suite, Brigg Fair

Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra/Richard Hickox

Editor's Choice

Frederick Delius’s music has weathered the storms of changing opinion, but the English composer, born in Bradford in 1862, has retained a loyal following throughout. He was a contemporary of Elgar, but Delius’s musical outlook was far more European – travel and study in America, Germany and France and a lifelong devotion to the music of Wagner formed an artistic character that could never be considered straight-forwardly English. In later life, he settled in the countryside near Paris, composing to the end of his days with the help of the young musician Eric Fenby, who later wrote vividly about his trials assisting the cantankerous old man. This album of three orchestral pieces, performed with dreamy delicacy by the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and Richard Hickox, gives a clear picture of the unmistakable sound that this truly cosmopolitan composer is loved for. read more
