Anne-Sophie Mutter

Editor's Choice

One of the world's finest violinists, Anne-Sophie Mutter has been astonishing audiences since her first performance with the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra at the age of 13. With Herbert von Karajan as her mentor, she released her first album of Mozart concertos just two years later. She has performed around the world, produced a formidable discography, and inspired new works by composers including Sofia Gubaidulina, Krzysztof Penderecki and John Williams. On this 2019 album of film favourites, Mutter and Williams collaborate to showcase some of the composer's best-loved themes, including some re-worked especially for the violinist he describes as “the greatest Germany has produced in a hundred years.” The famous motifs from Star Wars and Schindler's List are of course represented, as well as music from Dracula, Munich and The Adventures of Tintin. A real highlight is Williams' new arrangement of 'Hedwig's Theme' from Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone. A Sarasate-inspired frolic through the titular owl's leitmotif displays Mutter's prodigious technique, beautiful tone and thoughtful interpretation in equal measure. Also worthy of a special mention is 'The Chairman's Waltz' from Memoirs of a Geisha, for which cellist Lynn Harrell joins Mutter in an evocative dance reminiscent of another time and place, and the result is completely spellbinding. read more
