Haydn: The Creation

Haydn: The Creation

Editor's Choice

Based on Paradise Lost and the books of Genesis and Psalms, the source of The Creation’s libretto was an English poem. Haydn's translator, the Austro-Dutch librarian Gottfried van Swieten, was a man of many and varied accomplishments - including diplomacy and politics - but translation was perhaps not his forte. His literal rendering of English idiom turned out so awkwardly that productions in English-speaking countries today often use the German edition. This English-language recording has tidied up some of Van Swieten’s text to deliver a powerful and exhilarating performance. read more
